Falling For Yoga

Have you ever wondered why people love yoga? I can tell you a few reasons.

  1. Yoga is literally for any body. Really anyone can do yoga!

  2. Yoga can help with your balance strength and flexibility.

  3. Yoga keeps you youthful and active throughout your lifetime.

Those are just some reasons why people fall in love with yoga. Yoga is really wonderful because it is a workout as well as a work in. As you work your physical body you are also working your mind and body connection, by matching breath to movement and by really paying attention to what it is your body and mind need. Sometimes that is break in childs pose or an extra long savasana and that is ok!

Yoga is unlike your gym work out or any other group exercise program. In a yoga practice you learn to build strength by using just your body weight and by holding yoga poses for periods of time helping to tone your muscles. Yoga also helps with your flexibility by stretching your body. Your balance improves by doing balancing poses and focusing on your breath and learning about point of focus otherwise known as Drishti. Breathing helps promote focus improve balance digestion and strength. As you can see there is a lot to a yoga practice. Yoga isn’t just holding poses and trying to be more flexible. It is truly a mind body connection that you create while you practice yoga.

So how will yoga prevent falls?

Practicing yoga will help prevent falls by building strength in your entire body. Strong muscles help protect your skeletal system which keeps you upright. Balance will be improved with yoga through practicing all of the poses. You will learn how to find your Drishti or point of focus while practicing yoga which also improved your balance.

Flexibility improves as we know the more flexible something is the harder it is to break. The more you stretch your body the easier it is for you to bend down to pick something up or to tie your shoes.

A few poses that can help improve balance when practiced on a regular basis.

  1. Mountain Pose

  2. Tree Pose

  3. Warrior III

A few chair yoga poses that help with balance

    1. Mountain Pose

    2. Chair Pose ( with or without variations)

    3. Horse /God or Goddess pose incorporating core work.

These are just a few poses I personally find are a good help, but there are really so many more. I will have these poses demonstrated on my youtube channel in a week! Check it out and practice often.

Yoga on its own helps to improve balance which ultimately can prevent falls by helping you become more spatially aware, improves focus, improves all over body strength including core. Strong core protects your back! Yoga also strengthens your feet and legs which helps and our feet are something we forget about strengthening, they are really important and get us place so it is important to remember that they need to be strong too. Breathing is improved as well which also helps us regulate our nervous systems and the calmer our body and mind are the more focused we csn be. When we are in our everyday life all the things here plus more that we can from our yoga practice help keep us balanced and help us to avoid falls and if we do fall we are more likely to be able to get back up from a fall easier.

Falling For Yoga presentation was suppose to be held at Linden Ponds on 9/26/24 but due to extenuating circumstances I made a blog post about it here. Thank you for understanding and sharing in practice with me.

How to create a space in your home to practice yoga

A home yoga practice is a wonderful, It allows you flexibility to practice any time of day that works for you. You are in your own space so that means no leaving early to find a parking spot and rushing into class. You can practice completely solo, on-demand, or through zoom or other platforms, that will give you that sense of a community practice despite not having to leave your home. It also allows you to take your practice on the go when traveling for work or fun. It can sometimes be challenging to create a space that feels relaxing and peaceful. So here is some tips on how to make the perfect place to practice in your home.

First find a corner of a room that is in a quieter area & easily accessible to you when you want to practice. It doesn’t have to be a big space it can be small. All you need is enough room for you to move around a bit and your yoga mat, blocks maybe a blanket and bolster. You may want something to prop your device on if you are practicing online or if you are using music.

I love to practice with natural sunlight or in a dim lit room. If your preference is the same maybe look for a place where you have natural sunlight or an area where its easy to create lighting of your choice. Salt lamps and candles work great to create a relaxing ambiance.

I also love essential oils either available for use during practice or an oil diffuser close by where I can add in my own blends to create relaxing smells. Lavender & Lemon combined always smells really nice.

Soft music that helps you to relax can be great in the background, especially during savasana, just be sure if you are practicing online through Zoom or something similar that your microphone is off so that you don’t disturb others practicing with you.

Find something to cover your eyes in savasana. I use an eye pillow, but you could use a face cloth or a towel. It makes for a more relaxing savasana.

Cautionary notes:

  • If using candles use battery operated ones, or keep the flames far away from you when practicing and remember to blow them out when done.

  • Also when using essential oils if you have animals be careful which ones you use as some are toxic to animals.

My interpretation of B.K.S. Iyengar quote:“YOGA DOES NOT JUST CHANGE THE WAY WE SEE THINGS, IT TRANSFORMS THE PERSON WHO SEES"

When you practice yoga you start to see yourself and the world from a new perspective. It teaches you to be present, in the moment, to adapt, be open to change, to believe in yourself. It shows you that there is beauty and kindness in the world even in the darkest times. Yoga opens up your heart to your true self and to the world around you. -SF

Take Your Yoga Practice Off Your Mat

JUST BE.
When we practice yoga and meditation we learn to be in the moment and just be not judging not making assumptions of how things should be just ok with how they are. Thoughts come and go as you are in meditation or moving through a yoga flow. How you can take this practice off your mat is by practicing patience and not focusing on the past or on the future. Allowing yourself to JUST BE in the moment present with the now. Go try it !
